A fine swing clarinetist, an altoist whose sound was influenced by Johnny Hodges, a good soprano saxophonist, and a spirited blues vocalist, Woody Herman's greatest significance to jazz was as the leader of a long line of big bands. He always encouraged young talent and, more than practically any bandleader from the swing era, kept his repertoire quite modern.

During the period covered by this entry in the Classics Chronological series, the Woody Herman Orchestra was becoming well known as "the band that plays the blues" due to their hit recording of "The Woodchopper's Ball." Truth is, the Herman orchestra still played a large number of ballads (many of which featured Herman's singing) in addition to conventional swing charts.

Woody Herman always kept his band relevant, and didn't keep playing standards from the 30's and 40's, like many of his contemporaries. His exploration of rock tunes in the late 60's, early 70's, is laudable, and arguably more listenable than the original artists, at least to jazz fans. These songs contain inspired solos by many of Herman's sidemen/5(8).

Directed by Roy Mack. With Woody Herman and His Orchestra, Lee Wiley, Hal Abbott, Honey Abbott. Woody Herman's orchestra plays five tunes, and guest performers sing and dance.

First time on CD for this album by Big Band leader Woody Herman (who was also a fine clarinetist, saxophonist and vocalist!) and his Swinging Herd featuring Bill Chase on trumpet. Always wanting to approach modern music and not concentrate on his past, Herman and company interpret songs that made their debut in well-known Broadway plays/5(9).
